Information for new patients

We're always accepting new patients, and we love to meet new people and help them solve their oral health problems or just give them the best smile possible. If you're a new patient at VMA Dental, please take a look at the information below, and you are always welcome to contact us if you have any questions or concerns!

What to expect at your first appointment

On your first visit to VMA Dental, you will be asked to fill in medical and dental history forms. You will also be asked to bring a list of any medications you are currently taking. Once we have this background information, we’ll do an initial exam to determine what, if any, radiographs (X-rays) are needed.

Once radiographs are taken, you will receive a periodontal (gum disease) screening exam, a cancer screening exam (also called a soft tissue exam), and a TMJ or “jaw joint” exam. All teeth, existing restorations, and previous dental work will be checked, and we’ll discuss the findings with you. If treatment is required, we’ll discuss options, costs, and scheduling. For most patients, we book a cleaning at this time as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I see my dentist?

Recommended exam frequency varies from person to person depending on their particular oral health issues and goals. Patients with gum disease may need cleanings as often as every three months, while others may only need to be seen yearly. On average, however, a typical patient should have their teeth cleaned and examined twice per year.
